Peer review is an essential task that underpins scientific research. It speaks to its validity, its robustness, and the practice of science as a whole. But writing your first review can often seem a daunting task.
For early career researchers it can be difficult to know when you are ready, that you have the knowledge, and that you too can play an important role in your field. How can you ensure you give constructive feedback? How do you manage reviewing the research of someone more senior than yourself? And how do you know it will help them improve their paper?

About the speakers
Prof Ashleigh Fletcher is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, researching adsorption systems. Prof Fletcher has worked at Strathclyde for the past 14 years, firstly as a newly appointed Lecturer in 2008 from when she established her own research group, through promotion to Senior Lecturer in 2015 and Professor in 2020, and s second PhD in Chemical Engineering pedagogy ion 2020. Prior to joining Strathclyde, Prof Fletcher gained her first PhD and 8 years postdoctoral experience in the Northern Carbon Research Laboratories at Newcastle University, building on her first degree in Chemistry from the University of Durham. She is a Research Leader Fellow in the Hydro Nation Chair Programme and became Chief Editor of Adsorption Science and Technology in 2020.
Charlotte (Charlie) Kelner is a Senior Research Engagement Manager at Hindawi, with a focus on helping reviewers have the best experience possible, and on developing ways that Hindawi can ensure the best results for all who are involved in the peer review process.
